October 5, 2014 Comments Off on Steve Carell, Jennifer Garner talk ‘Alexander,’ parenting, Thunder From Down Under Articles

“I’m going to roll my eyes,” says Steve Carell, doing just that. He had jokingly warned me not to ask any of the questions “they hate.”

“They,“ in this case, is Carell and Jennifer Garner, who star in the new Disney film “Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day.” They play Ben and Kelly Cooper, the relentlessly upbeat parents of 11-year-old Alexander (young Australian actor Ed Oxenbould).

The family comedy, opening Oct. 10, is based on Judith Viorst’s enduring 1972 children’s book of the same name and is directed by Miguel Arteta, who worked with Carell on “The Office.” It’s written by Rob Lieber, who expanded the original concept — the book was only 32 pages — by giving everyone in the family a bad day and many more opportunities to be funny.

Both Carell and Garner have been switching between comedy and drama of late. Last year, she was in the acclaimed “Dallas Buyers Club” and she can currently be seen in Jason Reitman’s “Men, Women & Children,” a dark look at how social media has impacted personal relationships. In the drama “Foxcatcher,” coming out in November, Carell plays wealthy heir John du Pont in a tragic true story that is already generating Oscar buzz for the actor.

The pair are parents as well. Carell and his wife of 19 years have a 13-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son. Garner and her husband, Ben Affleck, have three children under the age of 10. So not surprisingly, the actors bring something of their own experiences to their roles.

But before we get there, and to what Carell has to say about his longtime friend Stephen Colbert taking over “The Late Show” next year on CBS, we talked about something else Australian. In the film, Alexander has an obsession with the continent and his dad accidently books Thunder From Down Under as a treat for his son’s birthday party, thinking they were Australian cowboys.

In case you, like the character in “Alexander,” don’t know, TFDU is a hunky male revue performed for mostly female audiences. (Very hot in Vegas, the boys will be in Ventura and Simi Valley later this month.)

October 4, 2014 Comments Off on Chilean Telenovela ‘First Lady’ With Jennifer Garner Producing Lands At CW News

With the CW’s Jane The Virgin, based on the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen, emerging as one of the best reviewed new shows this fall, the network is betting on another adaptation of a Latin American telenovela. The CW has put in development drama First Lady, executive produced by Jennifer Garner and Tariq Jalil.

The project touches on the hot-button immigration issue as it asks the question, What if the next First Lady of the United States is a former illegal alien? Written by Jenni Ross based on the Chilean series Primera Dama, First Lady chronicles one woman’s rags-to-riches journey from illegal immigrant to the White House, where she battles injustice and her own sordid past which has come back to haunt her. Garner’s Vandalia Films is producing with Warner Bros. TV where the company has a deal. Garner, Jalil and Ross executive produce, with Juliana Janes producing.

In addition to First Lady, Vandalia recently sold parenthood comedy Half Full to Fox. Garner, repped by WME, Management 360 and Jason, Sloane has Jason Reitman’s Men, Women & Children opening following its premiere in Toronto.

October 2, 2014 Comments Off on Jennifer Garner: Every Day Is a ‘Fresh Start’ When You’re a Working Mom Articles

She’s tackled the roles of superhero and super-spy.

Oh, and her husband of nine years just happens to be the new Batman.

Just don’t call Jennifer Garner “Supermom.”

“No,” says the mother-of-three on whether she has cracked the code of what it takes to be that perfect mother.

Speaking at the Los Angeles press conference for her latest film, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, Garner also said: “But the absolute [greatest] thing about being a parent is that every day is a fresh start.”

And she means every day.

“You always can say, ‘Today we’re going to try this!’ ” Garner, 42, says. “And if it goes horribly, you can say, ‘Today we’re throwing that out, and we’re trying this!’ That’s part of what I like about being a mom in general.”

So what’s it like being a member of the Affleck household?

“Our kids need to be allowed to have a bad day,” she tells PEOPLE. “And you need to show them that it’s okay to have the whole range of emotions. You should have it all: rage and anger and sadness, so there is a lot of room for joy and happiness as well.”

And she’s happy to show off what she’s learned as a parent to Violet, 8½, Seraphina, 5½, and Samuel, 2½, when the cameras are rolling.

“I have enjoyed this new world of playing moms,” Garner says. “This little kid whose mom is a teacher at my child’s school said, ‘Mrs. Affleck is a lot like my mom … She gets to have a lot of other kids.’ ”
